Skamania Lodge and Golf Course
Stevenson, WA
This 140,000 SF resort, reflecting the appearance of a historic lodge, has 4 levels including 195 guest rooms, 20,000 SF of conference rooms, restaurant, lounge, swimming pool, indoor/outdoor spas, tennis courts, and a golf course. A pro shop and clubhouse was also included with the project. Interface provided engineering design services for HVAC, plumbing, lighting, power and communication systems. The project received the 1995 “Architecture + Energy” Design Award for environmentally sensitive design from the Portland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. We designed skylights in the lodge, decreasing the amount of energy use. To mitigate and control the negative effects of the skylights, we used a mechanical shading device operated by photocells and micro-processor controls. A “scavenger” duct was also placed in each skylight to exhaust the heat build up in summer and recirculate it in the winter. The area of the building envelope was maximized to allow many opportunities for light penetration. However, the selected materials exceeded code requirements for U-value by a factor of three, thus reducing the heat loss that buildings experience from large areas of perimeter walls.
Interface also provided design services for
the addition to the existing hotel. This
addition included a two-story, 16,800 SF conference/meeting
room addition, including 14 conference rooms,
storage areas, breakout areas, and restrooms;
and, a 53-unit guestroom addition, totaling
approximately 30,000 SF.
