Industrial Engineering Projects

Bacon Pump Station
Folsom, California
For this project, Interface provided electrical
and instrumentation design associated with a
major renovation of an existing water booster
pumping station. The existing eight-pump (2-200
HP, 6-100 HP) system served three pressure zones.
The pumps were used in a single pumping scheme
that boosted water pressure associated with
the three pumping zone. Improved pressure zone
control, improved energy usage, and additional
pumping capacity were project goals. The existing
pumping station had to remain in service during
the construction phase. This required a staged
approach to construction, including combined
pressure zone operations. A fourteen-pump (5-200HP,
2-100HP, 3-75HP, 4-30HP) system was developed
to replace the existing pumping system. The
new pumping system consists of both new and
existing pumps (2-200 HP and 2-100 HP) to achieve
an economical design and to allow for the staged
construction. Much of the existing electrical
switchgear was reconfigured and reused. The
existing pumping station was powered by two
utility services. Two emergency generators were
installed to provide back-up power. The
existing PLC system and control strategies were
replaced with a new PLC system and enhanced
control strategies. A combination of Full
Voltage, Reduced Voltage and VFD based motor
starting techniques were utilized for motor
control. Control and monitoring functions
of the new system were integrated with the existing
SCADA system.
